Weekly Report 4 (10/6)
Team: Andy Yu, Yifan Zhang, Zhiyu Zhang
We met with Dr. Moran on Wednesday (10/4). During the meeting, we submitted the draft of
our preliminary report, in which we included the vital signs we’ve decided on to be monitored
by our device. Dr. Moran advised that we should further specify the range and resolution we
need for each vital measurement, but it is too early to determine how we are going to measure
these vitals. Since we have already done research on existing solutions for monitoring
physiological states, we will then investigate the sensors and how they work in products on the
market. These will provide us with some insight into our design.

Weekly Report 3 (9/29)
Team: Andy Yu, Yifan Zhang, Zhiyu Zhang
We met Dr. Moran on Wednesday (9/27) and submitted a report on the vitals relevant to
hyperthermia, hypothermia and dehydration, which are the three diseases we are trying to
diagnose with our product. Among all these ways to monitor or measure the vitals, some are
reasonable but some are not achievable in size or budget. We will discuss that in our
preliminary report. Our next step is to do research on the possible ways of measurement and
determine the resolution we will need for all the vitals.
Attached to the following pages is our report on vital signs.

Weekly Report 2 (9/20)
We had the first meeting with our client Dr. Moran. Before next meeting (9/27), we should do
some research on what vitals need to be monitored for hyperthermia, hypothermia and
dehydration (the three main causes of death for hikers) respectively. After that, our task is to
identify the ways or devices available for measuring these vitals. We will then come up with
several options and decide on which ones should actually be used on our prototype.

Client:
We have contacted Dr. Moran ([email protected]) but he hasn’t replied us yet.
Project:
We are going with our own project idea ‘a wearable alarming device for professional hikers’.
With this device, the heart rate, core temperature, blood flow, etc. of a professional hiker, as
well as environment temperature can be constantly monitored. If, according to the built-in
algorithm, the hiker is in a dangerous condition, the device will send out signals to get help.
